Laos History Stone tools discovered in Huaphanh and Luang Prabang provinces attest the presence of prehistoric man in its stage of hunters and gatherers over the Lao territory since at least 40,000 years ago. Agriculturist society seemed to appear during the 4th millenia BC as evidences have been found by archeologists-jar burials and other kinds of sepulchres have revealed a complex society in which Bronze objects appeared around 1500 BC and iron tools were known since 700 BC. The proto historic period is characterized by contacts with Chinese and Indian civilisations. As a result between the fourth and eighth century. Between the fourth and eighth century communities along the Mekong River began to form into towships, so called muang. This development culminated in the formation of the Lan Xang (Million Elephants) Kingdom. A Book Review on Filipino Author by Danny Sillada

BOOK TITLE: Unleash Your Inner Survivor (Your Guide to Life)

AUTHOR: Genevieve "Viva" Andrada

NUMBER OF PAGES: 260 pages

PUBLISHER: Atlas Publishing Co., Inc., Philippines

PRICE: PHP 275.00

On page 233 of the book "Survival", under a section "What other nations say about Philippines", a Hong Kong expat named Frank Cancelloni related his first impression of Filipinos as "domestic helpers or singers abroad". He even had a part-time "Filipina maid" who came to his apartment few times a week.

One day, he went home early and he was surprised to see his "Filipina maid" sitting on his desk flipping through his books from school.

"What are you doing with those books?" asked Frank in a cynical manner.

"I used to be a professor in mathematics and physics at the University of the Philippines before I came to Hong Kong", said the "Filipina maid" in a nonchalant manner.

"But why a "domestic helper" in Hong Kong?" asked Fra

DANNY SILLADA: A FILIPINO RENAISSANCE MAN

"Danny Sillada is the embodiment of a Filipino who defies the existing trend. His multi-faceted attribute in the humanities, as a Renaissance man, is identical with those of well-rounded historical figures during the Renaissance period in Europe. Sillada is a visual artist recognized in the Philippine art scene for his paintings and installation artworks, a literary writer who is into prose and poetry, a philosopher, whose writings are akin with existentialism, a first-rate performance artist, and also an art-critic."

The critical approaches to art or theories in studying art works are surely a rational activity. But more than that, it develops a completely new dimension and a broader yet at the same time more concrete perspective on the artistic phenomenon under question. Theories explain the unity of the work of art among its diverse manifestations. They explain why works of art are admired by people who know little about the history of art, why they survive th

Imagery of Reality and the Revelation of Truth... dcsillada

"There are two kinds of truths: those of reasoning and those of fact. The truths of reasoning are necessary and their opposite is impossible; the truths of fact are contingent and their opposites are possible." -Gottfried Leibnitz, Monadology

In aesthetics, art is understood and presented as a revelation of truth. The word revelation comes from Latin "velum/revelare" which is, to unveil or disclose something that is hidden. It means that, in the beginning, something is concealed or being kept secret until an appropriate time is ripened for its disclosure.

There are three essential elements in unveiling the truth: the knower, the object to be known and the tangible existence between the knower and the object to be known. Here, it is assumed that the first two elements of knowing the truth exist, otherwise, the presentation or disclosure of the unknown will never be revealed. In this case, the "object to be known" and the "knower" must exist and occupy space and time to complete the revelation.

TRIX SYJUCO: “I FELL IN LOVE WITH A KILLER”“Art is permitted to survive only if it renounces the right to be different, and integrates itself into the omnipotent realm of the profane.”

-Theodore Adorno, Prisms

Aesthetics is a poetic revelation of truth [1] through visual, literary and performing arts. As a poetic revelation, it uses visual imageries to reveal what is hidden through a particular aesthetic medium from the artist’s standpoint. One of these dynamic mediums is performance art or live art performance.

As an offshoot to visual art, performance art subverts the form and structure of conventional art making using a framing device and imagery of reality during the aesthetic presentation. Contrary to performing arts like dance, theater and musical – live art performance is a dynamic, unrehearsed presentation of the imagery of reality through live actions in front of the audience.

Imagery of reality is the symbolic structure of reality within a particular time-fr

The Heron’s Secret: Maxine Syjuco as Performance Artist

"Modern art touches a sore spot, or several sore spots, in the ordinary citizen of which he is totally unaware. The more irritated he becomes at modern art the more he betrays the fact that he himself, and his civilization, are implicated in what the artist shows him." (William Barrett, Irrational Man)

When the heron* walks before sundown on the rice field during summer, it is like a mythic figure from a distance. The dainty steps, the delicate white plumage, the well-defined long neck with tapering bill – creating an elegant step on the carabao** sludge as though it were a goddess coming down from her celestial garden.

Gentle and placid, the heron would woo the carabao to let it ride on its back and pick the insects feasting on the latter’s skin covered with mire. After completing its seem
