The Year of Magical Wanking sassyred
Event
Sunday, 29th January 2012

14 Acland Street, St Kilda

THISPOPBABY and Theatre Works present

The Year of Magical Wanking

Written and performed by Neil Watkins

"THISISPOPBABY are not so much cutting edge, as creators of a whole new edge in itself." - The Sunday Tribune

Neil Watkins has wanked more than is healthy...allegedly. One of Ireland's most exciting artists and incendiary performers; Neil is a force of nature, a maverick, a 33-year old homosexual with a Jesus complex. On orders from heaven, this is Neil's journey through the wilderness of queerness; from Catholic Ireland to the cruising bars of the world, from suburban Head Shops to Native American ceremonies.

Named as Queer Notions 2010 Festival Highlight by The Irish Times, and with a critically acclaimed sold-out season in the Dublin Fringe Festival, this is a brave and heartbreaking exploration of porn addiction, destructive sexual behaviour, Catholic guilt and family heartbreak. Written in hypnotic verse; it is both a profound personal journey and a furious state of the nation address.

Laos History Stone tools discovered in Huaphanh and Luang Prabang provinces attest the presence of prehistoric man in its stage of hunters and gatherers over the Lao territory since at least 40,000 years ago. Agriculturist society seemed to appear during the 4th millenia BC as evidences have been found by archeologists-jar burials and other kinds of sepulchres have revealed a complex society in which Bronze objects appeared around 1500 BC and iron tools were known since 700 BC. The proto historic period is characterized by contacts with Chinese and Indian civilisations. As a result between the fourth and eighth century. Between the fourth and eighth century communities along the Mekong River began to form into towships, so called muang. This development culminated in the formation of the Lan Xang (Million Elephants) Kingdom. In 1340 AD, Kind Fa Ngum led an army of 10,000 men in conquests in all directions: to the south, as far as the Khmer border; to the north as far as Sipsong Phanna (Yunnan

Ani Difranco - Carnegie Hall (2006) Music Emissions Alternative Music Reviews
Syndicated
Recorded barely six months after the September 11th attacks, the focal point of this solo acoustic performance was the one-two long-form poem punch of 'Serpentine' and 'Work In Progress' (later rechristened 'Self-Evident'), both written about American society before and after 9/11. Difranco writes that she felt "terrified but resolute"? as she performed: "What did I think I was doing? The nerve of me standing in front of an audience of New Yorkers and dragging them from a fun night out on the town, back into the epicenter of their pain." In those two songs of near-unbearable tension, she manages to make her audience laugh, cry, and cheer in ideological solidarity - a rare feat for any artist, and Difranco retains just enough humility to not go over the top.

To her fans, she is both a down-to-earth friend and a passionate activist - this is an example of an artist and fans deserving of each other. Difranco is personable, and while often unnecessarily cute, it's impressive how she can swing from being vulnerab
