Friday 11th May 2012

Half Moon Putney, 93 Lower Richmond Road

One of the most seminal indie-punk bands of the mid-noughties are back and will soon be wreaking havoc at The Half Moon Brace yourselves. The Others, the band who never went away, are back. The Others It's seven years now since Dominic Masters pioneered social networking in the most basic of ways -- making his phone number available to all who wanted it, then answering any call he received, replying to every message. In The Others, Dominic offered a sanctuary for the disparate youth who weren't at home in the mainstream.

Still his favourite song to date, "This is For The Poor" was almost a call to arms for the disenfranchised. A more angry, darker "Mis-Shapes" by Pulp,if you will. These were the days when guerrilla gigs were the epitome of DIY punk rather than corporate commercial endeavours and impromptu performances on the Underground, in the BBC reception, on the dodgems and countless other places, set The Others apart and offered them national profile which Dominic Masters exploited fully and ofte

Vic Godard & Subway Sect In 1976, Godard formed Subway Sect with three other fans of the Sex Pistols at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, who wanted another band for the line-up of the 100 Club Punk Festival

Despite their inexperience, Subway Sect made a successful debut at the festival and were taken on by Clash manager Bernie Rhodes

They appeared with The Clash on the White Riot Tour in 1977 and released their debut single, "Nobody's Scared"/"Don't Split It", in March 1978

While recording their debut album at Gooseberry Studios, Rhodes suddenly fired the entire band except for Godard

Ali MC and New Dub City Sound 7 Inch Single

Raspect Records producer and frontman Ali MC presents the debut limited edition 7 inch single from New Dub City Sound, a fresh mash up of reggae, dancehall, hiphop and dub. Featuring two songs, Home and Dub in Liberia, Ali MC combines conscious lyrics, solid beats and a backdrop of echoes and delays delivered with distinct energy and passion.

Home, produced by Ali MC, is a laid back summer dub with an overlay of surf guitar sounds, while Dub in Liberia is a reggae soundscape of life in the wartorn African nation, and sees UK Metalheadz producer Mikal lend his gritty techniques to the track.

Adding to the stylish production sound is punk-pop sleeve art designed by Jamaican born, New York bred artist Freestylee, whose work recently appeared in the National Gallery of Jamaica.

The 7 inch follows the online single and film clip release Welcome to Melbourne, Ali's take on Damien Marley's seminal Welcome to Jamrock, which speaks of racism w

Much as I have tried, I suspect I have not tried hard enough. I have to ask myself the question, ‘am I becoming tired of guitar driven bands?' The answer is no, I just struggle with this particular album. For some reason this does not move me as much as I expected, and indeed hoped it would. This is the best output by the Church, and it is solidly guitar driven no nonsense post punk inspired jangle pop. The twin guitars form the rhythm and provide a solid basis, then the bass line rolls in and finally the drums kick off. If that is not a good formula for a set of inspired songs then I don't know what it. The trouble is that it all comes across as being too detached from the emotions which one would have anticipated would lie behind the desire to make it.Within this format, "Destination" is as good a track as any to start an album. The problem is that, for me, the album doesn't seem to lead anywhere after that. It is almost as if, with an opener entitled "Destination", the album arrives at the beginning

Only John K. Samson, Canada’s punk poet laureate, would title a song 'Longitudinal Centre'. Longitudinal is not a word oft thrown around in pop music. Much of what Samson can and does do lyrically is not oft thrown around in pop music. Samson is, arguably, Canada’s best lyricist and Provincial is proof.

'The Last And' is particularly staggering: a song about the end of an affair between a lonely teacher and her married principle. “The last conjunction after every other and, I was just your little ampersand.” Heartbreak captured perfectly in punctuation. On the gorgeous duet with Christine Fellows, 'Taps Reversed', Samson perfectly illustrates the ridiculousness of our over-scheduled, obsessively anonymous, lives: “The calendar requests a meeting to discuss the time we waste. When would be good for you?”—Samson and Fellows half joke but there is also a terrifying honesty to these simple jokes. 'Taps Reversed' also holds as the album’s true stunner. Fellows&rsquo

The cover of Bob Dylan's "You Angel You" is the best track off this otherwise unremarkable album. I find it kind of peculiar how Manfred Mann had some of his biggest successes with Bob Dylan covers. However, I don't listen to this album much now and the band itself was, for me, reminiscent of a time in popular music when punk was changing the face of the music world and bands like this refused to change or adapt to the new wave and were about to be swept away. As a result, this album was destined to fade almost as soon as it was released. Yes it had some style - it was well-produced, it had some good musicians on it and it was well-played. Having said that, the over-emphasis on the synthesiser was a little wearying at times. Manfred Mann may well have been one of the best keyboard players of his generation but I was never a great fan of that instrument and found that all too often it was used to cover up basic deficiencies in ability or a critical lack of creativity. I cannot lay the first charge here, given
