Some angles don't change, like the silly Little Nobody infatuation for things robotic.

The name of the new Little Nobody EP is 'Robota', and for this one we shanghaied Japanese producer Toshiyuki Yasuda (one of Si Begg's favorite musicians, and who just finished working with Senor Coconut, a.k.a. Atom Heart) into the arrangement, to do gorgeous, robot-style vocoder vocals as Robo*Brazileira.

The resultant track (with accompanying remixes by Funk Gadget and Dick Drone) was released today in the digital download terrain via IF? in conjunction with Hypnotic Room, on Beatport, etc, and it's just been remixed by Steve Stoll and Jammin' Unit, so look out for those wild versions early on in 2009.

In the meantime, the rather crazy original version here is already getting steady club and radio airplay in Japan and over in the UK, as well as on 2SER in Sydney and 3PBS in Melbourne. More info and feedback from fellow DJ/proddies is

In case you're not aware of Steve's work, Zen Paradox was established in 1991 by Steve Law as a solo outlet for his more techno-oriented electronic music work. Steve had previously been a member of the groups Foil and Guild of Fire, and is a current member of Black Cab and High Pass Filter. His other solo projects include Mutagenic Mind, Mr. Suspicious and Solitary Soul.

He's been producing avant garde and electro-acoustic music since 1984, and in 1996 was awarded the ABC Classic FM Computer Music Award. :D Since the late 90's Kosheen have dominated dancefloors and charts worldwide. Their live show continues to attract huge crowds and remains a festival favourite. On 28th July the two founder members of Kosheen, Darren Beale and Markee Morrison show that they continue to push their music forwards, remaining at the cutting edge, with the release of their first single as Kosheen DJs, 'HotWax'.

Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. It is also a list of people he has most likely listened to and is another way of saying that all the music he has heard, or for that matter, everything he has been through, is recorded by the brain, swished around by time, and reflected in his songs. Loves, hates, sounds, tastes, it's all in your head. Musically and lyrically, this message comes through loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea.

With all this in his musical blender, he has come up with

So what is it with these SNOG guys? Just when we have them all figured out as agit-prop electro propagandists they go and drop a brand new CD-EP the title track of which (City) is an electro-power ballad. And a strangely affecting and even touching electro-power ballad at that. Don't they know that electronic bands are meant to just make the same record and over and over again? Sheeesh. This could really upset the apple cart.

And what's with those new collaborations with those denizens of the dubstep deep Monster Zoku Onsomb? Are they weird but kinda catchy or what? And Thrussell (if it really is Thrussell?) now he sounds a bit like a mutant Berlin cabaret singer from the 1920s over an elastic mashed-up beat. This really is too much.

And then they bring out the remixes, The Calculator's svelte dancefloor killer, Curse Ov Dialect's straight-up insanity and to top it off right near the end of the record there is some guy sounds like he is singing songs around a camp fire to a bunch of Girl Guides.

Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality.
