Recently my publicist, Marsha Friedman, President of Event Management sent me the following question: After the performance I spoke with her mom (who was in tears the whole time) about their incredible daughter and her future. Their daughter's dream is to be on stage singing professionallyI said I would forward some information to you - to get your thoughts. After much contemplation, I wrote to the parents (excerpt):

As a musician, bands have it easier than a solo artist in terms of cost to make a CD. Other than that, there are little or no differences. For bands/artists who wish to start the process of making, distributing, and getting radio airplay by themselves, believe it or not, you are starting your own record label. Even if your goal is to land a major recording contract, you will still need to gather more attention for your music by cutting, distributing and promoting your own music. Youll have a much better chance at getting a great record deal with a major label if you are successful on your own first.

Let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect and admiration for songwriters who can write song after song. Those very talented individuals who, while they are sitting on the plane, in the bathroom, or at a dining table, grab a napkin, the roll of toilet paper, the safety guide on the airplane, or whatever may be handy and start frantically writing. While I have had this inspiration once in a while, its not a fluent talent. So my hats are off to you! The statistics were very interesting and I hope not conclusive of what is going on in the music industry right now, although I suspect they are indicative of it.

Walked in the door around 9pm hahahah ... to see Erther play and say hello ... but the lineup had been bumped around and someone was warming up things with a few tracks ... and when I returned to the floor with a drink ... aniki was playing.

Aniki got the shits pretty early on. The decks weren\\\\\\\'t stable and there was a fair amount of skipping, so he was crashing records togther but it didn\\\\\\\'t matter, as it was in keeping with the theme of the night, loud and raw. He finshed rather early I thought by dropping a Motley Cru track (God I think it was \\\\\\\'Kick Start my Heart\\\\\\\') and cranked it to 11 while he packed up ... Some people in the lounge closed the door in disgust and things were underway, truly a fitting way for the night to start ...

Future Music Festival have let us know what to expect from the DFA Records Stage line-up and predictably, it's looking pretty enticing.

I remember when I was first exposed to the reggae sound of Rebelution, the Santa Barbara four piece. My best friend had just gotten back from Bonaroo in 2010, and one of the bands that he wouldn't stop raving about was Rebelution. I have likewise been a fan since, seeing them live for the first time last year in 2011. Their brand new album, Peace Of Mind, which is their third, was just released this week. The album has three different versions: the original, the acoustic, and the dub. My review will focus on the main, and will mention the other two later. The band has been together long enough now that they beginning to get their own groove. Refusing to settle for the moderate attention they have received up to this point, they are carving out a notch for themselves one record and concert at a time. Their large, devoted fan base will be stoked to know that somehow they have achieved the rare feat of releasing brand new material, yet still remaining true to their original sound. According to an interview with

Asking for Flowers is the third record from Canadian alt-country favourite Kathleen Edwards, and it is also the most confusing. She takes lyrical and conceptual risks with these songs, and while you have to admire the courage with which she writes and sings, the hit-and-miss nature of the result will leave you scratching your head.

It's not that these songs are bad - it's more that there is one element of practically all of them that just doesn't sit quite right, that isn't indicative of what Edwards does best, that crosses some sort of indefinable line. Opener 'Buffalo' is promising enough, dramatically enriching Edwards' musical palette. The difference between 'Buffalo' and the following song, 'The Cheapest Key,' is a critical lesson for Edwards - she wears sadness well, but not bitterness. While she usually uses her grit to her advantage, there is something over-the-top about her singing "B is for bullshit and you fed me some," while wearing her predictable Blue Rodeo musical influence for all to see.
