Event
Thursday 19th June 2008

Hordern Pavillion, Moore Park, Sydney

The Mars Volta head back to Australia and New Zealand in support of their critically acclaimed fourth album The Bedlam in Goliath (out now through Universal Music) - arguably the band's most accomplished to date.

The Bedlam in Goliath was born after a fateful visit to a curio shop in Jerusalem by Omar where he purchased a Ouija board as a gift to Cedric. Renamed 'The Soothsayer' the Ouija board became the band's post-show ritual. As interaction with The Soothsayer increased, otherworldly instances began to overwhelm the band - including physical ailments, studio flooding, music tracks disappearing and the album's original engineer suffering a nervous breakdown.

On the eve of restarting their project, Omar buried The Soothsayer, in an attempt to reverse the curse that had plagued them. The Bedlam in Goliath follows the stories told to The Mars Volta by The Soothsayer, as they attempt to reverse curse set upon them.

Upon listening to The Bedlam in Goliath, Alternative Press declared that "The Mars Volt

TYLER KYTES DEBUT EP Available NOW!

Hailing from Lindsey, Ontario, 22-year-old singer/songwriter Tyler Kyte has a voice that grabs you and won't let go. Blessed with a distinct vibrato, and raspy tone reminiscent of Eddie Vedder and Michael Stipe Tyler sings with a passion and emotion rarely heard. His songs combine the classic rock of Steve Miller and Pearl Jam, with a more rootsy approach that could as easily fill a stadium as a coffee house.

Tyler began his professional career as a child in acting. At the age of 10, he landed the coveted role of Young Tommy in the cult musical Tommy at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. This was soon followed by a recurring role in the pre-school science show Guess What and co-hosting the highly successful television series Popular Mechanics For Kids for three years. Additional credits include principal and leading roles in Darcy's Wild Life, Missing, Prom Queen , The Elizabeth Smart Story, Goosebumps & Are You Afraid Of The Dark among others. History of a 'miraculous mineral'Asbestos was used in scores of home materials during the 20th century, but there was a cost.By Arrol Gellner, Inman NewsOctober 1, 2006 Over a century ago, American builders began using a remarkable mineral product. Being mined from a type of serpentine rock, it was natural, abundant and easy to produce, yet its unique properties made it almost limitlessly useful. It was resistant to chemicals and intense heat. It was an excellent electrical and thermal insulator. Out of its fibers, you could weave a cloth that wouldn't burn. You could even mix it with other materials to make them stronger and more fireproof.ADVERTISEMENTOver the course of the 20th century, American industry — with the government's blessing — found thousands of uses for this miraculous mineral.Woven into a cloth, it was used to insulate electrical wires. Mixed with a binder, it made a fireproof insulation for pipes and ducts. Mixed with cement, it made a host of practically indestructible

Let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect and admiration for songwriters who can write song after song. Those very talented individuals who, while they are sitting on the plane, in the bathroom, or at a dining table, grab a napkin, the roll of toilet paper, the safety guide on the airplane, or whatever may be handy and start frantically writing. While I have had this inspiration once in a while, its not a fluent talent. So my hats are off to you! The statistics were very interesting and I hope not conclusive of what is going on in the music industry right now, although I suspect they are indicative of it.

Well, there is another feather to put in his cap, a new album titled Gun Metal Blue.

The typical 98 lb Weakling that gets sand kicked in his face courtesy of Mr. Atlas, illustrated in their cartoon on the band's site, goes home and puts on a 98 lb Weakling record (an album not a CD). He returns to the beach all dressed up looking cool then takes his guitar and smashes it over the bullies head, end of story, he gets all the babes, happy ending.

KUALA LUMPUR -

Ever since the notion of "disco" was filtered through our collective system and guiltless straight people began to enjoy rhythm-based music again-OK, call it post-Acid House-Trance music has undergone a great cell division.

Genres begat micro-genres, which mutated into wholly new forms. Some conferred coolness, others solidified into cheese. That, in itself, was fine because, in clubland, nothing is worse than a tired sound. But DJs got so bent out of shape over how to categorize a particular track or producer, they often seemed to drown in the sea of minutiae. A music conversation with a DJ often resulted in a competition of cool, instead of the answer to the question: Um, did you like the record?

Saucy Monky "Flicker"

Has anyone else been hearing a beautiful new song called "Flicker" by the group Saucy Monky? I just heard it over here in Ireland on Today FM (Ireland's national radio) this morning and it's BEAUTIFUL! It's a love(lost) ballad, and Cynthia Catania (the lead singer on it) is kinda like Chrissie Hynde, I guess you'd say. Her voice is really soothing and sexy, I find, but it's also mature and you can feel the emotion behind it. It's my fave track off their album, which I JUST HAD TO go and buy after hearing it on the radio so much. And I'm a freakin' poor college kid - so go figure. Wow, I actually SUPPORTED an artist instead of stealing the track from online...so F**K you, RIAA!! :-) Plus, the disc was dirt-cheap. it's an 9-track mini-album EP that is selling for something ridiculous at HMV and Tower for like 9.99 EURO (that's what I got mine for anyway) and I see it's available on their site for the same price but in US dollars!

Is it too early to lay claim to this year’s summer anthem…? Supafly Inc are duo Panos Liassi a.k.a Mister P, a producer hailing from London, long surrounded by hip hop, dance and funk, and Andrew Tumi a.k.a One, a singer / songwriter immersed in reggae, soul and West African beats from an early age. by Mark Kirby,

Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality. Those of us who aren't Christian - agnostics, Muslims, those whose spirituality can't be pigeonholed - can still understand the positive spirituality that is the wellspring of Laster and Pratesi's music, and still get our groove on. Laster, who composed the excellent lyrics, and Pratesi, who created most of!

by Mark Kirby,

The picture on the front of her CD Cover to Cover shows singer songwriter Julie Moffitt covered with a bed sheet and smiling unselfconsciously at the viewer. This image, in its simple honesty, is appropriate for her CD. In addition to recording original material, Moffitt decided to include songs by other artists that she loves and have inspired her. Indeed, all people learn by imitating others and for artists it is even more important. As the great Salvador Dali once said, "Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing."

The songs she chose to cover, and the way she plays them, with nuance and deep emotion that doesn't come in a can, shows that she has been around for a while. With an interest in classical music (Chopin) and art rock (Kansas, Emerson Lake and Palmer) going back to her childhood days in the '70s, her music is another example of how there is nothing magical about youth culture in music. No disrespect to Alicia Keys and Corinne Bailey Rae, but you can't
