| | MusicDish | News Item | New York, NY -- Polarity/1, the multi-genre artist best known for bold, honest, hard-hitting songs, is releasing a brand new instrumental record titled "Music From the Other Side." Fitting to the title, the album consists of smooth, jazzy tracks much different from louder albums like Yankin' the Food Chain. Music From The Other Side is the soundtrack for a dance performance by Lisbon's Quorum Ballet. The Other Side's principal objective is to fuse the style and art of the dance of Lisbon and New York. The work is the collaboration of choreographers Daniel Cardoso, Jonathan Hollander and Thaddeus Davis, artistic directors of Quorum Ballet, Battery Dance Company and Wideman/Davis Dance, respectively. Dark, moody, erotic and aggressive, it explores the theme of oppression, which has always been an issue for the people on both sides of the Atlantic. The piece examines the roles of the different agents: the instigator, the oppressor, the oppressed and the observer. | | MusicDish | News Item | by Mark Kirby, Whatever one could say about Hills Rolling, the moniker of one-man band Trey McGriff, you can't accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page he lists as influences about one hundred or so bands and musicians. There are old schoolers (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), new schoolers ( The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur, Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). No doubt this is in part a smart-ass commentary on the "what are your influences" question. It is also a list of people he has most likely listened to and is another way of saying that all the music he has heard, or for that matter, everything he has been through, is recorded by the brain, swished around by time, and reflected in his songs. Loves, hates, sounds, tastes, it's all in your head. Musically and lyrically, this message comes through loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea. With all this in his musical blender, he has come up with music releases and reviews releases pop rock blues Read More... |

| | http://worldmusiccentral.org | Syndicated | Various Artists Entre Dunes Et Savanes Desert Blues 3 (Network, 2008) I have often wondered whether there is a correlation between music and landscape, physical landscape and type of music it induces. War and destruction certainly pass off their influence onto music, but can a particular landscape in the way it is perceived in the human mind result in a particular kind of music? Is the way one travels across the landscape an influence on the music produced? Could the size of an open sky create a particular genre? I’d like to say that I know the answer to this or that there is an enthnomusicological study out there that proves the point, but, sadly, I have no real answer. I was thinking on these questions as I was listening to the double-CD set Entre Dunes Et Savanes Desert Blues 3. Beyond the basic framework of the blues or the shared tragedies of war, poverty, oppression and deprivation of these musicians, there is a nebulous quality that ties all this glorious music together.
