KOSHEEN DJ'S featuring VIVA CITY 'HOTWAX' :D slidingdoors

:D Since the late 90's Kosheen have dominated dancefloors and charts worldwide. Their live show continues to attract huge crowds and remains a festival favourite. On 28th July the two founder members of Kosheen, Darren Beale and Markee Morrison show that they continue to push their music forwards, remaining at the cutting edge, with the release of their first single as Kosheen DJs, 'HotWax'.

Kosheen have an army of fans for their sound, but anyone lucky enough to catch Kosheen DJs playing in a club will testify that they continue to push the boundaries, delivering a sound as up to date as any you will hear on the world's most forward thinking dancefloors.

'HotWax' is a slice of hard edged electro, featuring vocals from Viva City frontman, Ali. Energetic and electronic, the main synth riff drives the track forwards until the vocal takes over. Ali uses his expressive and punk tinged delivery to create a darkly emotive vocal, perfectly suited to the track. The break builds in a swirl of electronic effect

How I Feel About It :

We reviewed Di Evantile's Inertia last December and I remember thinking that Beatrice Clarke went a little easy on it. It seemed a little too Animatronics, too machine-like and the keyboard sounds seemed too cheesy and overused. Even if it was superbly orchestrated (and some of it well-played) it sounded a bit hollow and soulless to me. So imagine my surprise when I drew Infrared Clock to review. I thought, "Here's an excellent chance to set the record straight." But Di Evantile changed some things, and for the better.

This album is dreamy and trance inducing. It's the perfect music to go to sleep to, without actually inducing sleep. There's something at once modern and primeval about it, and it urges the listener to dream on an epic scale without requiring epic amounts of energy to do it. This isn't a work that I will ever feel passionately about because it's only interested in the passion of dreams, which are usually distan

The group popularized the genre as well, by appearing on the British chart show Top of the Pops and hitting number one in the U.K. with the 1992 album U.F.Orb. My immediate response to 'Inertia' was, "Oh no, digital pitter-patter, this is going to be boring; all the sampled midi stuff is not really music anyway." Then, right about the time I decided to put aside my often stuffy, somewhat elitist attitudes regarding the conventions of musical expression - you know, acoustical instruments, the sound of human fingers across metal or nylon strings, the nuances and timbres present in the fiber of skin covered drums, the natural decay of volume following a cymbal crash or the subtle overtones the ear discerns lofting from the metal alloys - I began to get drawn into a kind of haunting pull from this composer's expression.

As I listened, I realized I was responding from a primal place. This composer has found an effective basis of form and expression that corresponds with human emotion. I do find that interesting considering the aural medium is digitall

by Mark Kirby,

Whether you call it praise music or New Jack gospel, this genre is most often a classic case of "preaching to the choir," with song lyrics lifted artlessly from the King James bible and histrionic music calculated to "reach out and touch somebody's hand." Dear god. Luckily, Charles Laster II and Silvia Pratesi don't make this mistake on their new record Journey of Life. Their songs reference salvation, heaven, and living the Christian life but, like secular soul music, have an uplifting universality. Those of us who aren't Christian - agnostics, Muslims, those whose spirituality can't be pigeonholed - can still understand the positive spirituality that is the wellspring of Laster and Pratesi's music, and still get our groove on. Laster, who composed the excellent lyrics, and Pratesi, who created most of!

the music with a seamless combination of live musicians and samples, remind us how gospel and rhythm and blues gave birth to soul music in the early sixties and how a new kind of s

by Mark Kirby,

The picture on the front of her CD Cover to Cover shows singer songwriter Julie Moffitt covered with a bed sheet and smiling unselfconsciously at the viewer. This image, in its simple honesty, is appropriate for her CD. In addition to recording original material, Moffitt decided to include songs by other artists that she loves and have inspired her. Indeed, all people learn by imitating others and for artists it is even more important. As the great Salvador Dali once said, "Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing."

The songs she chose to cover, and the way she plays them, with nuance and deep emotion that doesn't come in a can, shows that she has been around for a while. With an interest in classical music (Chopin) and art rock (Kansas, Emerson Lake and Palmer) going back to her childhood days in the '70s, her music is another example of how there is nothing magical about youth culture in music. No disrespect to Alicia Keys and Corinne Bailey Rae, but you can't
