| | | Blog Entry | Five ideasWhat people should be talking aboutBy Dwayne Mamo April 29, 2007 | 12:00 a.m. CST[1] EXIT STRATEGYPresident Bush has vowed to veto a Senate proposal passed Thursday that would require American troops to begin leaving Iraq by Oct. 1.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the legislation is “in keeping with what the American people want.” However, the White House immediately labeled supporters of the bill as defeatist and announced that the measure “is dead before arrival” on the president’s desk. Indeed, members of both parties are already starting work on a new bill. Thursday’s legislation passed 51-46 along largely party lines, suggesting that Democrats do not have the two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto.Meanwhile, the troop “surge” that Bush authorized three months ago has led to improvements in Baghdad and the Anbar province, said Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. military commander in Iraq.Thursday’s vote came almost four years after Read More... |
| | | Blog Entry | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nashville, TN--October 3, 2005--Who knew that this country singer was really a closet chanteuse? Dyann Woody makes a seamless transition from 'Yee Haw' to 'Ooh La La'. She not only has the voice of an angelic siren, but what will amaze you even more is just how easy and pleasing her music is to listen to. She reaches across many genres and meshes elements of '70's singer/songwriter style, jazz, blues and pop with the art of a well-crafted lyric. Although this is Dyann's first solo album, she has shared musical success with her husband as part of the Country Music Group, The Woodys. Their debut album on Rounder Records went #1 on the Americana charts; they were voted the Top County Vocal Duo at the International Music News Awards and have received worldwide critical acclaim for all three of their albums. However, there was still a part of Dyann that was musically unfulfilled. She wanted to write songs that expressed all of the emotions and experiences that she and other women h Read More... |

| | Freedom to Tinker | Syndicated | It has been an exceptionally busy week for copyright policy. We heard from all three branches of the US Federal Government in one way or another, while the citizens of the Internet flexed their muscles in response. The most covered story of the week was the battle over SOPA and PIPA -- the twin proposed bills that aimed to cut down on online piracy of copyrighted works by giving the government significant new authority to block access to allegedly infringing web sites. Other authors on this blog have pointed out how the bills show inconsistency in the copyright industry's position on regulating the internet, could threaten free speech in repressive regimes, and may ultimately be found by the courts to violate fundamental constitutional liberties. On Wednesday some of the most popular sites on the web "went dark" or otherwise heightened awareness of the issue, and the surge citizen pleas to Congress caused a surprising reversal of momentum in the House and Senate. [Update: Both PIPA and SOPA have now been s Read More... |
