. Jon Pleased Wimmin - from the ashes of pre-house clubs such as Kinky Gerlinky and Taboo, when a good night was measured on hedonism, came screaming through Jon Pleased Wimmin! After many a night dancing on podiums in London's clubland - Jon was given his break as a DJ by Danny Rampling at his weekly night Glam, allowing him to play to a whole new audience and propelling him into the public eye. These days he can be found playing out as far afield as Australia and South America, but is still as popular as ever in the UK.
Billie Ray Martin has been dubbed ‘The Queen of Electronic Soul’ in her time. Anyone who had the opportunity to hear her in Electribe 101 has her beautiful and haunting vocals imprinted on their mind for eternity. As a DJ, Billie delivers a distinctive and spot-on set of cutting-edge new Electro-Tech. The growing response to her DJing has led to bookings taking her across the UK and worldwide, generating a frenzied reaction wherever she plays.
Reza holds a residency at Fierce Angel in Ibiza and is definitely one to be keeping an eye on for 2010! A new single out with K Klass finds him as busy as ever, with regular airplay on Radio One who describe him as ‘A great talent!’ Reza has performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals including V Festival and he is often found DJing at clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Fabric and Heaven. Also a producer there probably isn’t a spare minute of the day when Reza isn’t firmly connected with the progression of dance music in some way!
Ken Fan is now the proud resident of Fabric in Madrid. These past few years have seen things go from strength to strength for the founder and resident DJ of Around the World in 80 Raves, the old Miss Moneypennys and Chuff Chuff Resident. His production & DJ skills have gained massive support from the industry’s most illustrious names from Carl Cox, Joey Beltram, Roger Sanchez, Dubfire and Nick Warren to name a few, so there is no doubt that Ken will be the one to look out for in the future of house music.
Allister Whitehead is one of house music’s true legends and needs no introduction. He is one of the worlds hardest working DJs both in the UK and abroad and when he isn’t behind the decks, is busy in the studio remixing and producing. He regularly rocks it at clubs such as Cream, Fantazia and Godskitchen.
Rocky (X-Press 2) – well known for being part of Djing duo ‘Rocky and Diesel’ and one third of top-forty-smashing X-Press 2, Rocky is also a celebrated DJ the world over. Having recently completed a tour of Australia and with regular slots in Ibiza all through the Summer, Rocky is currently enjoying delighting clubbers up and down the UK.
Kelvin Andrews was one of the original residents of Golden in Stoke and has been part of the dance music landscape for two decades. Kelvin was one of the friendly faces behind the decks at the Luv Dup nights in Manchester in the early 90s. He has since played in Japan, Australia, Germany, Italy, France and Ibiza too many times to mention. He is one of the most revered pioneers of Acid House and plays sets that stretch right across the musical spectrum.
Farley Jackmaster Funk
– Chicago’s Farley had a massive hit in the 80s with Isaac Hayes ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ and is one of this planets top DJ, regularly dubbed ‘The King of House Music’. As legends go they don’t come much bigger than Farley, and he has had many, many hits over the years and is part of the fabric of the Chicago house music scene and the pioneers of the house music scene in general.
Paris Brightledge – ‘It’s Alright’ was produced by iconic legend Marshall Jefferson and has been hailed as one of the most influential songs in House Music. Paris has played at such clubs as ‘Studio 54’, ‘The World’ and ‘The Limelight’, to name just a few. While paying close attention to maintaining the "Chicago Sound", Paris has also penned the phenomenal underground ever-classic "Learn To Love’ and ‘She Didn't Know’. Only a very limited UK tour this time around but you can have the pleasure of seeing Nlf3 - one of France's most influential underground bands - in Manchester on Wednesday 3/06/09 at the The Retro Bar, Sackville Street. The French trio, compared by The Guardian to 'a Radiohead seduced by the idea of live improvisation', released their third album "Ride On A Brand New Time" in 2008 - a sweet series of songs which takes the listener on a voyage through a fantastical and enchanting world of krautrock and sleazy basslines, there are hints of Tortoise, Can and even Gang, Gang Dance. Album stand out tracks are "Several Kinds", "Echotropic" and "MMM What Curse" and the band's live performaces match or even better their studio work and should not be missed.Veterans of 100s of gigs and festivals throughout Europe the invitations to tour alongside the likes of Battles and Animal Collective - with whom they now have a musical kinship - brought them to the attention of the UK and US music press. Warp reecords invited them to support Gang, Gang Dance and hometown support slots for Holy Fuck and Berg Sans Nipple followed. Solo artists Panda Bear and Avey Tare (Animal Collective) reciprocated by supporting Nlf3.The individual band members brothers F.lor and Don Nino and friend Mitch have solo careers and have also collaborated with The Dirty Three, Shannon Wright and other artists. Band member F.lor mixed Yann Tierson's soundtrack to that wonderful French feelgood film 'Amelie'.Highly recommended! DOUBLEJO(H)NGREY live set & DJ setTVH3 liveOscar Wildestlye (Modernaire) laptop setNational Forest DJ setAs the month draws to an end, it's time to head south of the City Centre for Lost & Broken.Residents and Curators doublejo(H)ngrey bring you a host of frantic guests united by repetitive rhythms, distorted guitar, subhuman synths and a sense of foreboding.Once again doublejo(H)ngrey will play both a live set and a DJ set of our own particular blend: a rock n roll, electronic, rub-a-dub, prog-rock rave.Extra special guests for the evening are the legendary TVH3. Hosts of Manchester's sleaziest live music club Fiction Non Fiction at Tiger Lounge, TVH3 embody this city's dark underbelly. Buried in their suits they perform their intense set, with sounds reminiscent of Joy Division, Suicide and the darker side of Kraftwerk. Having not performed for almost nine months, they've written a whole new set for Lost & Broken an event not to miss at any cost (did I mention its free entry?).Modernaire's beatmaster, the cult DJ Oscar Wildestyle is performing a live laptop set especially for Lost & Broken. Modernaire's music fuses melancholy electronic pop with tough, sometimes glitchy beats, fuzzy synths and female vocals. The Oscar Wildestyle mixtapes that have stormed the internet are a sparkling mix of disco, electro and mashed up hits.Guest DJ for the night is National Forest, Faith & Hope's oddball beatman and one half of SirYesSir. His rawkus DJ sets cross all genres: House, rock, ragga, punk, funk and 2step.As usual we've got our own particular style of monochromatic decor and visuals to add to the sinister atmosphere. Please don't be put off by the Private Party sign on the door, you're all invited. There's been some confusion with Pleasure but, despite the venue being closed for the rest of the month, they're opening specially for us. Think of it like a free party or a squat rave, but with a proper bar. Also, as it's your last chance to smoke in a pub EVER we'll be dishing out free fags, roll-ups and the cheapest cigars money can buy, along with the usual free exclusive CDs.One last warning, please do get down early to avoid disappointment. We hate to turn people away, but when it's full, it's full.Lost & Broken.Saturday, 30th June.Pleasure, Withington.8pm 2am, Free entry.www.lostandbroken.co.ukwww.doublejohngrey.co.uk
